Prominent Players

The Club has attracted many famous players to play at Stratford on Avon Golf Club.
  • 2003 Ian Poulter – a friendly four ball 66. Ian was 2nd in Open 2008; has won 9 European trophies and had a great 2008 Ryder Cup.
  • 1986 P B (Laddie) Lucas Walker Cup 1947 & Capt Walker Cup 1949.
  • 1984 Seniors PGA Championship won by Ernie Jones with a total of 280. Peter Butler and Christy O’Connor Senior played (took a 10 on 13th hole 3rd round). Best individual round 67.
  • 1983/88 Pip Elson – Captain England Boys 1971; Rookie of the year 1973. Club Professional.
  • 1976 onwards - James (Jimmy) C Wilson – Walker cup 1947 and 1953 and member.
  • 1970/80’s – John Whitehead; Nick Tarrant; Andrew Dunbar; Neil Dainton, Carl Pettersson (of US PGA fame) and later Andrew Jones. All played as our Juniors and later flourished using their skills in Professional golf.
  • 1962 Eric Brown – British Masters 1957; Ryder cup 1953 to 1959
  • 1962 Max Faulkner - Open Champion 1951; Ryder cup team 1947/49/51/53 and 1957.
  • 1958 Harry Bradshaw – British Masters 1953 & 1955; Ryder cup team 1953/55/57.
  • 1958 Christy O’Connor (Senior) – British Masters 1956 & 1959; Ryder cup player 1955 to 1973 consecutively.
  • 1946 Henry Cotton – Open Champion 1934 and 1937 and later 1948
  • 1931 T Phil Perkins – English Amateur Champion 1927 and British Amateur Champion 1928.
  • 1930’s Dr William Tweddell – member of the Club; British Amateur Champion at Hoylake 1927; Captain of the Walker cup team in 1928 and 1936.
  • 1929 Henry Longhurst – later becoming the renowned golf correspondent and television commentator.
  • 1929 Reg Whitcombe – British Open winner 1938 and his Ryder Cup brothers Charles and Ernest.
  • 1928 Ted Ray – British Open winner 1912;US Open champion 1920; Captain of the Ryder Cup team 1927
  • 1928/9 Arthur Havers – British Open winner 1923; Ryder cup team 1927.
  • 1928 Alex Herd - British Open winner 1902; runner up 1920.
  • 1928 -31 Abe Mitchell – Ryder cup player and personal tutor to Sam Ryder; described as the best player never to win an Open. Course record holder 69. Std scratch 75.
  • 1928-31 George Duncan – British Open Champion 1920; Captain of the victorious Ryder Cup team 1929.
  • 1896 Jack Burns - the Club’s first Professional, winner of the British Open Championship at St Andrews in 1888.
